I can understand why there is a requirement to have a 64 bit OS with so much RAM when building ChromiumOS, but is there some sort of a software dependency reason for why there is a recommendation to build on Ubuntu 10.04 rather than 12.04?

Just wondering if it is worth me struggling with a bunch of drivers for a system that I will only be using to build another OS.

Until recently, our workstations at Google were Lucid-based, so that was all we actively supported.  Now, they're Precise-based, so that is supported, but the docs haven't been updated.

That was a crazy fast response. Thank you for that.

Chris is of course correct, and i'm not disagreeing with what he said.  but building ChromiumOS should work fine on any x86_64 Linux system running a 2.6.9+ kernel.

it _should_ but we've run into various issues around system tools not quite working as expected.  I mean, we had to work around a couple of unexpected behaviors moving from Lucid to Precise.  I think the newer version of sudo did a few things a little differently, for example.  So it's more that the build tools might have a few hiccups on platforms that we don't support.  Not so much that compiling won't work :-)
