Is there a way to save files (in my case image files) locally?

I'm new to extensions so my question might sound quite obvious to
some, but I went through the API and I haven't found any way for
extensions to save images or any other kind of files locally. Is it
possible at all?

FileSaver API not implemented yet, and no convenient way to save
(export) data locally. But you can still use a method described here
http://html5-demos.appspot.com/static/addoncon2010/index.html#slide36

This method does not allow set a name to the exported file. File
saved with a name like "d56362fb-e0b2-42b1-a1c9-f114cf775349" and
users will have to manually rename it.
