When I compile Chromium and go to the malware test page I don't get
any warning even though safe browsing is switched on. If I got to the
same page in an official download of Chrome I get a red background and
a warning.

Why doesn't Chromium alert me the page isn't safe the same way
Google's official browser does?

Chromium does have safe browsing enabled. I guess an empty profile was probably used, and the safe browsing service hadn't downloaded its filters when you tested it.

Check for the existence of files named "Safe Browsing *" within the chromium config directory (~/.config/chromium on Linux). These should take a couple of megabytes; if they're missing or incomplete, just leave the browser running a couple more minutes until they're fetched.

Try loading http://ianfette.org to test this.

The files are there, something very weird is going.

If I visit http://ianfette.org using my everyday browser (Chrome) I
see the warning.

If I visit http://ianfette.org using a newly compiled Chromium on the
same PC I don't see the warning (even after waiting for safe browsing
files to be downloaded) at all, I see a message saying test site.

If I visit http://ianfette.org using a newly installed Chrome or
Chromium on a different PC's (tested 2 others) or Virtual Machines
(tested 3) I don't see the warning (even after waiting for safe
browsing files to be downloaded) at all, I see a message saying test
site.
