I'm having the same issue. I installed the chromium-daily (13.0.762.0
(Developer Build 84908 Linux) Ubuntu 11.04) and all my bookmarks are
gone. This is NOT good.

You should back up your bookmarks. Besides, it's your fault for using
the Dev/Nightly builds without proper precaution.

Calm down. Nightly Chromium builds are not tested and not intended for end users' regular use. If you want tested builds and righteous indignation, use Chrome, not Chromium.

Calm down Oba. Yes, I'm sure losing the bookmarks is a Chromium/
Chrome problem, and I'm sure losing any data is important, but you
need to think carefully about what was said instead of being angry,
which you should not be.

As mentioned, Chromium Dev/Nightly and Chrome Canary builds are for
testing only and not intended for end users nor for regular use. You
should expect problems and possible loss of any data at any time if
you are going to use these builds.

You should not be saving important info and using Dev/Nightly/Canary
at the same time. Yes, it is the users' responsibilities to make any
backups of their data/profile if they are going to be using Dev/
Nightly/Canary.

On a similar note, help Chrome devs!!! Please take note that I
confirm this problem in the current Canary 13.0.762.0.

Upon installing that version, all my bookmarks are deleted! Also,
when I try to export existing bookmarks from a working Chrome into an
HTML file and import it into 762.0, the browser just crashes!

Here's a list of all changes committed between the two revisions you listed in the original post:

Looks like the culprit is r84829, and the bug has already been fixed:

Could the links still be in a directory somewhere?

This happened to me too. I am using linux and I haven't found anything
yet.

But that doesn't get the links back, unless they're still in a
directory somewhere.

Check for a Bookmarks.bak file in your chrom(e|ium) profile directory
(search around if you don't know where that is). If it's there, copy it
somewhere else FIRST, then make sure all instances of chrome are closed,
then rename it to Bookmarks and put it back.

If all goes well, you'll have your bookmarks back. Otherwise, I've no
idea what else you could do.

This is the second time (recently, at least) a change list causes the bookmarks to be deleted (the first time involved clearing cache).
Can someone, please, add tests that will prevent such cases in the future?
For example, checking that the bookmarks are still there after you run all of tests (that are not meant to delete bookmarks as a test itself, obviously), or before and after tests that touch/delete files or similar approaches.

No, PhistucK (and many of the people on this list, including me) do not
work on Chrome. This list is mostly for discussions relating to the
browser; here's the list's description, in case you haven't read it
(it's sort of tucked away, I guess):

"General Chromium discussion, suggestions, and high level design
questions or comments around other topics that are not focused on the
engineering or implementation of code belong here. If you are unsure
about where you should post, use this list. This is a high-volume
mailing list."

That's not a bad idea. Might want to file a bug and link to this thread;
I don't think Chrome devs are likely to see your message deep in this
thread, and it would be good to have a bug for it anyway.

Just drop it and stop using a developer's version if you're so pissed. These are testing builds and these sort of things happen on testing
builds for Christ's sake; so stop complaining.

You should be using the stable version so these things don't happen. You were warned before you even downloaded a testing build the first time!

A strategy is I use portable-apps version for general use and backup my profile folder. And I use LastPass to maintain passwords. I don't recommend to use the built-in password manager which is not a security one. And there are lots of online bookmark service, but I don't use bookmarks all the time. If a website is really important, we could remember the site and google the detail right?
