Feature request: RHEL/CentOS 6 support past version 26

I understand Chromium version 27 is not going to support older Linux distros with gcc versions that do not support C++11 well. However, RHEL6 has support for gcc 4.7.2 here

Please continue supporting google-chrome on RHEL/CentOS 6.

Note that these systems were never officially supported. I'd recommend CentOS to make its own Chromium package.

I have put up some scripts for building current Chromium versions (26 and 27) on EL 6 at

https://github.com/hirakendu/chromium_el_builder

. See the readme for details. Due to the large file size, the current RPM chromium-26.0.1410.63-192696.x86_64.rpm, built on CentOS 6.4, can be obtained by downloading the project archive. Please note that this is only for the time being and I do not intend to actively maintain it, but I hope it may help others. A couple of patches may be merged as well.

Aside, thanks to Paweł for maintaining the excellent chromium ebuilds for Gentoo Linux (which I have been happily using for several years) that helped clarify some of the build steps, in addition to the official build instructions at chromium.org.

Thanks Robert, thanks Paweł. I think a separate chromium-packagers forum should be useful for building chromium with system libraries, which appears to be a huge effort in itself. I hope issues about simple builds with bundled dependencies can be addressed at both forums, including on environments that are not supported due to minor reasons.

James, could you explain more?

Why would we prohibit literally downloading the RPM packages?

What should be done is that packages should not install on systems on which they won't run.

There can still be systems on which packages can install and run, but they are not supported, which means this can change at any time.
