Hello everyone,

First let me introduce myself, I'm Logan Anteau, an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering double major at the University of Toledo. Right now I'm working full time (one of my required engineering co-op terms) for a company who makes industrial test equipment, there I am helping with the development of our controller software (written in Visual C++/MFC).

Just starting to really get involved with our software this summer at work, I've lately really felt like I'm not learning enough programming or writing enough code for school alone. I was thinking getting involved with an open source project would be a great way to learn, especially since I've always been a Linux/free software guy. Chromium seems like a natural choice to me as it's the single piece of software I use most often. The community is large so I felt it would be a great place to learn.

That being said, getting started here is a bit intimidating. I've read through much of the documentation on dev.chromium.org, and have been lurking this mailing list for a while. I'm not really sure what to do next to get started. I've scanned the bug tracker, and nothing really jumps out as me as something I can grab and start running with.

So, can people help me with, where do I go from here? I see the dev documentation mentions "your group" often, do people in the community organize into groups? I would love for someone to help me get started, but I know that's asking a lot, especially since everyone here (well maybe not everyone) is a volunteer. I know when I get started on something I will have many questions.

Thanks in advance for everyone's advice. I appreciate it. I'm hoping to make a contribution here in the future and hopefully grow as a developer as a result.

(I'm also idling in #chromium on FreeNode, my nick is lanteau)

Suggestion: look for bugs with the label Hotlist=GoodFirstBug [1], and if something interests you then post a comment on the bug saying that you'd like to try to fix it; some of the project members CCed on the bug may be able to assist you getting started.

You can also look for crashers [2] and memory leaks [3] [4], some may be simple to fix.
