New issue 118149 by sina...@gmail.com: Page loads then immediately
disappears -- ERROR:gles2_cmd_decoder.cc(4725) in Console
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

Chrome Version : 18.0.1025.54
OS Version: OS X 10.7.3
URLs (if applicable) : foursquare.com, chase.com, presidioparkway.org,
yahoo.com, wunderground.com
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
Safari 5: OK
Firefox 4.x: (4.x? Really? "OK" in 9.0.1)
IE 7/8/9: (not tested)

This bug is probably just as frustrating to experience as it is to
describe. Basically, when I visit a certain set of websites (which I
haven't found a commonality across), Chrome renders the page them
immediately paints the entire window white as soon as the page is finished
loading.

I can see the elements of the page get painted as they load. But as soon
as the page finishes loading, every page element vanishes leaving an empty,
white window. All the elements are still there--I can click on links,
produce hover text, use contextual menus.

When this happens, I see a single line printed in Console.app. An example:

12-03-14 12:06:45.050 AM [0x0-0xefaefa].com.google.Chrome:
[29231:-1397185856:447134316921067:ERROR:gles2_cmd_decoder.cc(4725)]

I've attached two example series of screenshots.

Some additional notes:
- I started experiencing this problem in the past couple of days
- I can only reproduce it on 1 of my 2 machines
- the same sites fail consistently
- restarting Chrome or my machine have no effect
- the same sites consistently fail across all profiles including inside an
incognito window

The "gles" and symptoms imply a GPU bug?

Sorry for the difficulty.

I've attempted to reproduce this on an iMac (iMac8,1 24-inch, Early 2008,
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB), on both 10.6.8 and 10.7.3, with both
current Chrome Stable (18.0.1025.142) and Canary (19.0.1060.0).
Unfortunately I can not reproduce the problem.

What is the exact type of Mac on which the failure occurs?

The error message from glTexImageIOSurface2DCHROMIUM indicates that
something is going wrong with the code path which draws Flash to the screen
via Chrome's compositor. This code path was disabled late in the Chrome 18
release but is still enabled in Chrome 19 and later. If something goes
wrong here, I would expect that only the Flash content would disappear, not
the entire web page, but it's difficult to guess how things might fail.

We need to be able to reproduce this in house to make any progress.

My best guess is that this is pretty old hardware (the ATI Radeon HD 2600
is quite old) and that there might be a bug in the graphics drivers for it.

I've been having problems with Flash and Chrome ever since the last update.

Problems include, apart from this page disappearing after load:
-The whole computer freezing temporarily;
-The Flash elements on certain pages behaving weirdly (glitches) or don't
appear at all;
-Eventually Shockwave Flash crashes.

Chrome was pretty stable before I updated it (I suppose version 18?).

I'm on an Early 2011 MacBook Pro 2GHz i7, with 8GB RAM.

Any help would be appreciated.
I wouldn't like considering a move to another browser, but this is becoming
extremely annoying.

This is happening for me as well. It is intermittent but once it starts I
have found force quitting and relaunch/reloading everything seems to
resolve it for awhile. I have had to do this 3 times over the last week. I
haven't noticed if it starts with the exact same collection of tabs open. I
have no problems running that 3d-transforms/poster-circle.htmlposter. I am
running an older MacBook Pro - OS X 10.6, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.66 GHz
processor.

Shockwave Flash just crashed and I was able to finally load the page I was
trying to get. It has crashed a couple of times this week, but never
coincidental with the pages disappearing until right now.

Pretty annoying and yet, I can see why you haven't been able to reproduce
it since it seems pretty random to me.

I hope there is a fix soon. Let me know if I can provide any additional
data to help!

Yesterday, I found that after I force quit Shockwave Flash I was able to
load the youtube page that had been disappearing. I hope to try that
work-around again when it starts happening again.

While I still can't reproduce the originally reported problem, I noticed on
our 10.7.x Macs that the line

kernel[0]: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero

was being logged to the Console. The code in Chrome is careful to avoid
allocating a zero-sized IOSurface, and setting a breakpoint in
IOSurfaceCreate in the plugin process (running Flash) indicates that this
is the stack trace when it happens:

#0 0x97ac2f40 in IOSurfaceCreate ()
#1 0x990f6930 in CA::Render::create_iosurface ()

I'm not sure yet whether this CATransaction is the one Chrome uses to
resize the plugin (in
src/webkit/plugins/npapi/webplugin_delegate_impl_mac.mm) or one used
internally by the Flash plugin. However, it seems the problem may be that
the plugin is sized 0x0 at some point and this is intermittently causing
crashes of the Flash plugin process, causing the consuming code in the
renderer and GPU processes to report an invalid IOSurface ID.

Will continue investigation to understand better what's going on and
whether any fix for this particular issue would be in Chrome or Flash.

Anyone who can reproduce this problem, when providing information on this
bug, please indicate your Mac OS version, type of machine from "About This
Mac -> More Info..." (e.g. "MacBook Air, 13-inch, Mid 2011"), and attach
the output of about:gpu. Try to reduce it to a particular set of tabs that,
when open, reliably provoke the problem from a fresh start of Chrome.

*Please* do not update this bug just to indicate "me too". If you are
experiencing it, provide all of the information requested in Comment 13.

I seem to be able to reliably provoke a crash either in the Flash plugin or
the renderer process by opening multiple instances of:

http://osdir.com/ml/quicktime-api/2009-09/msg00111.html

which contains three Flash banner ads. This is a start; it indicates
problems in Flash plugin initialization. Other reproduction cases welcome.

I found that if you disable the flash plugins then the problem goes
away. ...I guess you add a new problem in that now you no longer have flash.

I'm having difficulty provoking the Flash plugin process crash on demand.
The above link opened 10 times within one window doesn't crash the plugin
process reliably as I was finding earlier. I also attempted to open roughly
10 different YouTube videos in the same window and couldn't provoke any
crashes.

The one crash I caught in the debugger, with multiple instances of the
osdir.com link above, was the same as that in Issue 97285:

I also saw one hang of the Flash plugin process loading multiple YouTube
videos simultaneously. The following stack trace comes from a Release

Again, however, no reliable hangs or crashes while simultaneously loading
many Flash instances, in either a TOT Chromium Release build using the
Flash plugin from Adobe's web site, or in Chrome Canary with the bundled
Flash player.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

Finally caught one crash in the debugger with 10 or so separate windows
viewing the osdir.com link above. The page seems to reload itself and it
took a few minutes for the crash to happen. This is with a Chromium Release
build and Adobe's shipped Flash Player. not the version bundled in Chrome.
The crash is inside the Flash player while it's calling OpenGL.

This crash was seen on a Mac Pro with a GeForce GT 120 running 10.6.8. It
looks like 10.7 machines may provoke the crash more easily; continuing
testing there.

Another crash inside the Flash plugin, with ~12 windows of the osdir.com
link open, on a 15" MacBook Pro Mid 2010, 10.7.3, dual Intel/NVIDIA GeForce
GT 330M GPUs, with a Chromium continuous build and Adobe's latest Flash
Player. This one looks like it might be caused by the machine running low
on VRAM. There's some reentrancy in the Flash plugin in the stack trace
which is concerning.

Comment #25 on issue 118149 by k...@chromium.org: Page loads then
immediately disappears -- ERROR:gles2_cmd_decoder.cc(4725) in Console
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

Another crash in the Mac OS OpenGL implementation, called from within the
Flash Player, on the MacBook Pro described above. 8 osdir.com windows open,
waited several minutes, reloading the pages periodically.

So far I don't see an indication that Chrome is doing anything incorrect in
its management of GPU resources related to Flash. I've verified via logging
that Chrome never resizes the Flash player's CALayer to 0x0, which could
plausibly cause the zero-sized IOSurface allocation inside Core Animation
in Comment 13, above. It's not clear that that zero-sized allocation is
actually causing problems.

This might be a good stress test for reproducing Issue 97285 locally.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

I witnessed one instance where a page containing a Flash plugin instance
wouldn't complete loading. At the time, the Flash plugin process was taking
99% CPU. Killing Flash using Chrome's Task Manager allowed the page to
continue loading. I don't know what provoked this situation, though causing
Flash to crash with the above stress tests might be related.

Anantha, this issue seems to be affecting a few of our mac users. Given its
severity could we please try to see if we can repro it in-house? Thanks.

Comment #29 on issue 118149 by k...@chromium.org: Page loads then

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

Sailesh provided a Flash build which manually resized all CALayers
allocated internally to 1x1 to avoid the zero-sized IOSurface allocation
warnings to the console.

I did a fair amount of testing of this plugin compared to Adobe's
standalone Flash plugin in a top-of-tree Chromium build. The tests mainly
involved loading http://osdir.com/ml/quicktime-api/2009-09/msg00111.html in
six separate windows and attaching gdb to Chrome's Flash plugin sub-process.

First, after updating to the top of tree sources as of this morning, I
can't reproduce the problem in Issue 97285 any more.

The plugin process usually crashed within five minutes. With Sailesh's
build the crashes appeared to mostly be related to out-of-memory
conditions. With Adobe's shipping Flash plugin, machine instability
occurred (MacBook Pro, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M, 10.7.3). One time the window
server hung; another time texture corruption during browser scrolling
occurred. Upon a reboot, Sailesh's build was once again working fine;
Adobe's build caused texture corruption during scrolling very quickly.

I've asked Sailesh to apply his patch to the version of Flash shipping with
Chrome and provide it back to Adobe.

At the present time I'm unable to identify any possible fixes to Chromium
to address this issue. We haven't been able to reproduce the issue
described above and in Issue 114683 where the page contents go blank upon
loading. The only actionable Flash stability issue based on testing has
been identified and a fix is in progress. Unfortunately, the problem where
the Flash plugin process consumes lots of CPU and prevents page loading
from completing isn't readily reproducible.

I'm marking this bug ExternalDependency again. If anyone can provide a
scenario which reproduces a problem reliably, please post it here, along
with full information about the machine as indicated in Comment 13.

Same problem for me too. Here's details on one of the pages I had an issue
with. The first pages I had problems with were StreetEasy.com and Ebay.
Definitely intermittent and no consistency between which pages load and
which pages don't.

Possible Solution:
I fixed my problem on OS X. If you go to Preferences in Chrome => Show
Advanced Setting => Content Setting (Under Privacy) => Disable Individual
Plug-ins (under Plugins)

OR just go to chrome://plugins/

Check to make sure that there is only one version of flash enabled. Solved
the issue for me.

Thank you all for the useful feedback. I would like to understand whether
the problem is with Flash itself or the compositor (since Flash triggers
the compositor). For those of you who successfully cleaned up your Flash
plugins and can no longer reproduce the problem, would you mind now going
to about:flags, enable the "GPU compositing on all pages" experiment
(you'll need to restart the browser) and see if the blank screens come back?

Thanks!

Still repros for me with "GPU compositing on all pages" enabled, though
there was less of a flash of the content before going blank -- some pages
just open blank. I then tried disabling GPU compositing, while also
disabling threaded compositing, and it repros in that case too.

Indeed I had had threaded compositing enabled when I tried "GPU compositing
on all pages". Since then I enabled GPU compositing, and disabled threaded
compositing, and reproduced the bug. At first, everything seemed fine, and
now I am in a state in which I cannot even get http://www.google.com to
appear in a new tab. I did restart the browser each time after changing any
setting.

Oddly, if I hit command-option-J (for script debugging) the page is
actually shown, after having appeared totally blank.

Does the browser recover if you shut it down and restart it or are you
permanently stuck in white-page mode?

Would you also mind running chrome with --enable-in-browser-thumbnailing

I saw the problem again with the Flash plugin process consuming 100% CPU,
and new pages using Flash failing to load. It happened with:

Chrome 19.0.1084.52 (Official Build 138391)
Flash 11.2.202.235

Here are three thread dumps gathered with the shell script below.
Unfortunately I didn't have symbols installed for Chrome, and when I tried
to download them, the window server crashed, I got logged out, and lost the
session state. Mark, Nico, do you think it would be possible to symbolize
these thread dumps (just the calls within ChromeMain) after the fact? They
might give a hint about what's going wrong in Chrome or Flash.

Script:

#!/bin/sh
# invocation: grabstack [pid] [base name]
ME=`whoami`
sudo /usr/libexec/stackshot -i -p $1 -f $2.untxt && sudo
/usr/sbin/symstacks.rb -f $2.untxt -w $2.txt && sudo chown $ME $2*

Just started happening to me too. My chrome is currently updated and I
leave my browser window up with multiple tabs of all my most visited sites
and I've refreshed them all and they're fine but whenever I make a new tab
and click on a link that I have never been to then the page turns white
after loading. For example I was looking to watch a show and online and it
loaded the page and then a half a second later the page turned white but I
could still hear sound from the video. Then I loaded an article from BBC,
which I rarely visit, and it loaded the page and it was completely fine for
a couple minutes then as soon as i scrolled down it went blank.

After a couple days with no problems following disabling my duplicate
copies of Flash and Google Talk plugins, the problem just reoccurred. After
page loads, few second of functionality, then tab blanks. Once it occurs
for a website, it does not stop until browser is restarted. theverge.com
triggered the blank screen this time.

and https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89045).

There is a good chance that the whiteouts indicate failure to allocate
additional VRAM resources, including IO surfaces. I'll update the bug once
both fixes are in Canary.

Here is another dump of info from one JP user with the issue.
The log does mention something about IO surfaces.

Comment #51 on issue 118149 by jdub...@gmail.com: Page loads then

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

I was having major problems on 19.0.1084.54, but have since been upgraded
to 19.0.1084.56, and although I've been using Chrome less since this issue
arose, I have not noticed this issue since the upgrade. I see the crash
reports here were on 19.0.1084.54. Wondering if it's safe to get back in
the water... I will try switching back to Chrome as my primary browser and
see how it goes.

jdubman@ thanks for staying engaged. When you got the whiteout on the
apple.com page, did you have a number of other tabs open? When it starts
happening does it affect all subsequent pages you try to open?

A quick google search for this error reveals that it may be stemming from
Flash:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3275814?start=0&tstart=0

There's at least one person suggesting that turning off H/W acceleration
for Flash takes care of this error. Anybody willing to try?

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

I have the same issue on an iMac. It only happens when I have quite a few
tabs open already and at a new tab but once its started Chrome becomes
unusable in the most recent tab.

Tabs which are already open still work fine and I can navigate to new URLs
in those without any problems. However if I try to open any page in the
most recently opened tab (or any additional newly opened tab) the page
loads and then immediately goes blank.

Closing existing working tabs does not seem to help the situation - I have
to close Chrome down for it to resolve. This is happening on a daily
basis.

I am using Chrome Version 19.0.1084.56 on an Intel iMac using OS Lion
version 10.7.4

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

I've been able to reproduce the behavior in my own build by
artificially "failing" to create an IO surface creation for the image
transport surface. This looks suspiciously like a leak of gpu resources
that leads to a failure to allocate io surfaces. I filed issue 133885 for
the gpu memory leaks that seems to be coming related to our handling of
composited CA plugins (e.g. flash).

Same problem as described above, Chrome Version 19.0.1084.56, Intel Mac
running Lion 10.7.4.

One behavior I've noted that no one else has described is that if I re-size
my windows down the white vanishes and the page re-appears. I can scroll
about and see the entire page within the much, much smaller window. If I
try to enlarge the window the scroll bars will fail and only the small bit
that is drawn will remain.

After experiencing this in Chrome Version 19.0.1084.56 for a couple of
weeks, I downloaded Canary (first experience with the development browser!)
The white-outs in Chrome happen most frequently and with shorter "uptime"
after a restart the more tabs I have open. I only got three tabs in Canary
open before I saw the same symptoms.

This is my about:gpu.

In canary we're running a field trial for forcing compositing in all
pages. You can turn it off in about:flags but setting the "Compositing for
all pages" to Disabled.

We've recently also found that we see to be leaking GPU memory when
hardware acceleration is enabled in Flash. Would you mind trying turning
it off by un-checking "Enable Hardware Acceleration" in Flash's Settings
(you get there by "right-mouse-clicking" on a flash element and
selecting "Settings..." from the context menu).

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

I run into this issue on a pretty regular basis after the Shockwave Flash
(Chrome plug-in host) has been leaking. Killing the Shockwave plugin fixes
it.
Right now shockwave is at 45 threads, 1.3% CPU and 840MB in Real Mem and I
started experiencing the issue in Chrome M19. I opened up weather.com on
Canary and I am getting the blank page as well. Here is the GPU info from
Canary:

That's a very useful observation, jfeasson@ . Thanks! It would be
extremely valuable if those of you who are experiencing the whiteouts can
try opening up the Task Manager, kill the Shockwave Flash process and let
us know if that makes the problem go away.

I tried to kill the Shockwave Flash process (while looking at a page that
had disappeared). As soon as Chrome reported that the plugin had crashed,
the page reappeared and everything worked normally.

I have disabled plugins and this fixes the problem for me. As soon as I
click on a flash object to enable it, the page goes white again.

Yea I have been having problems with any page with shockwave flash in them.
YouTube pages go blank most fo the times, but with lots of refreshing it
would eventually work. If a page with flash loads, it is very likely to
crash in a while, and make several other pages crash too.

Killing shockwave solves the issue for me as well. Pages that weren't
loading popped right back into existence.

I've been also experiencing this issue for several months now... it mostly
stopped happening for May to Mid-June, but now it is basically making
Chrome unusable for me. When the issue first started happening, I disabled
all extensions/plugins, and then the frequency was less. I re-enabled
flash, and it came back full force, disabled flash and only sometimes it
would blank out. Pages with flash were basically guaranteed to not work.
When it started working okay again, I re-enabled flash, and up till last
week it was fine.

Now further investigation shows that with flash disabled, HTML 5 video also
triggers the issue (Vimeo falls to this when flash is disabled, sound
plays, page vanishes). Additionally, it should be noted, that when this
issue is occurring, in other browsers (Firefox, Safari), I experience Flash
blanking out (but sound still continuing in the case of a video), but
unlike Chrome, in these browsers only the Flash region disappears, not the
whole page.

kbr, me too!:

"This is happening for me as well. It is intermittent but once it starts I
have found force quitting and relaunch/reloading everything seems to
resolve it for awhile".

I have had to do this 2 each day.

I have a feeling that there is a GPU resource leak beyond the one in Flash
that is in the process of being fixed by Adobe.

On the desktop, killing the GPU process in the Task Manager makes the web
page rendering recover.

If anyone has reproduction steps (e.g. sites to visit) which provokes this
reliably, please post them here.

For me its random - one day the sites will load, one day they won't.
Doesn't seem to matter what exact sites I load. Closing Chrome and opening
it again most of the times makes them reload properly.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=118149

I am having a similar issue on window-resize. Once it has happened, it
*can* happen after a reload (other times it simply never shows up).

Chrome Version: 20.0.1132.57
OS Version: OS X 10.6.8

What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. Go to a site (I can repro on nytimes.com right now) on a large monitor
(I'm using a 27" Cinema Display)

2. Resize window by dragging bottom right corner to almost cover screen
(I've seen this happen at window sizes as low as ~1500x1100 and maybe lower)

3. Page starts to flicker to white (or whatever the page's background color
is) and depending on where you release the resize it will stay that way.

4. Switch to another tab and maybe you will see something, or maybe it too
will be blank.

Hi folks,

Can users who have been noticing this help us out by testing if this is
fixed on the beta channel?

For folks who can reproduce the whiteouts *without Flash* (i.e. they have
Flash disabled but still see this problem), try using Chrome beta (Chrome
21) with Flash disabled. Does this fix it?

For the Flash-specific issue we're waiting on Adobe for a resource leak
fix. But there's clearly another Chrome-specific issue that we believe is
fixed in beta and would like to confirm.

Thanks,

launching the script debugging tool is not related to restoring the white
page to its original content.
What makes the content reappear "sometimes" is when you resize the window,
and lauching the programer tools is de facto resizing the window.
I noticed that the content reappear only at very small window sizes, and
that if you play with the size (resize up and down) you will see that at
certain sizes, the content reappear, and if you keep resizing, then the
content disappear. If you stop to resize when you just go the content back,
then the content stays displayed. So it has to do with the view port size,
and with flash, for sure. and with mac, i am testing the chrome beta right
now and will come abck with an update tomorrow

FWIW, I've seen what may be the same bug with different manifestation on
Linux. The Economist blog sites (www.economist.com/blogs), get large black
regions all over the page when there are many tabs (20 or so) open with
different blog postings. Twice the machine has locked up entirely. It seems
pretty reliable to me.

This was with both m20 and m21. I tend to leave the machine and Chrome up
for long periods. I have just disabled Flash and haven't seen any problems,
but I'll need to experiment longer to be sure.

Tested if any recent bugfixes had correct this, but the bug is still
present with Chrome 22.0.1207.1 dev and flash 11.3.300.265.
The problem appears again after few days of system up with chrome running
with more than 30 tabs opened.

When a page containing the flash plugin went totally blank, i resized it in
order to see it again, and then deactivated the hardware acceleration in
the settings of the flash player, and this made it work again properly.

I am now trying to install flash beta version 11.4 (and i will enable again
hardware acceleration)

you reproduce the problem without Flash on Chrome 21 or later (i.e. on
beta, dev, or canary channels)?

@nikobonnieure, as we said before we're still waiting on a fix from Adobe
on the Flash issue. It should be fixed in Flash 11.4. Can you confirm that
either upgrading to Flash 11.4 or disabling Flash fixes the issue on Chrome
21 and later (e.g. on 22 dev as you're currently reporting)?

I'm also experiencing the same problem. On some web sites (not all), I get
the page rendered and then it goes white. I have disabled all my
extensions and still get the problem. Youtube video is blank (but audio
plays). I coincidentally updated to Lion recently just for the record.

I do get "Shockwave Flash has crashed." quite a bit. I usually
uninstall/reinstall Shockwave and Flash players after that. Doesn't that
engage the built-in players of Chrome?

Visiting flash sites after a crash yields the white tabs of death.

Hey Chrome people,

This exact issue started for me today! I don't know if something updated in
the last days, but out of the blue this bug has started today (Mon 13 Aug).
Well I should say I noticed today...

Bug appears:
- Any flash page.
- The css3 demo
(http://www.webkit.org/blog-files/3d-transforms/poster-circle.html)
- html5 youtube video (with flash disabled)

Please note that ALL of these pages START working as soon as I make my
window size smaller!

And even weirder. I don't get a blank white page, but my page becomes
transparent. So I can see other windows open (finder/adium/whatever is
behind chrome) or my nice (osx) background image.

I'm on Lion 10.7.4. Using chrom 21.0.1180.75. If you guys need any add.
info, let me know.

olaf.kwant : Does it happen when you have lots of open tabs? Does it get
better when you close tabs?
