New issue 110324 by g...@globalnet.co.uk: "Reopen the pages that were open
last" fails
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=110324

Chrome Version : 18.0.1003.1
OS Version: 5.1 (Windows XP)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open several tabs, with "Reopen the pages that were open last" set in
options.
2. Close Chrome.
3. Re start Chrome

What is the expected result?

The previously opened tabs are reopened when Chrome starts...

What happens instead?

8/10 times, the home page only opens with Chrome.

Or, hmm, actually, not sure if this has anything to do with issue 99088.
Does this happen when there is only one profile, or does this require
multiple profiles?

If this happens with only one profile, this is separate from issue 99088,
and the fixes won't help here. If this only happens when there are multiple
profiles, this might be the same bug I fixed as a part of issue 99088.

I have only one user set up on Chrome... Possible that the home page sounds
as a default user? There must be a reason that is loads the home page when
it fails to open the last opened pages?

Hmm, no, none of the different startup options should make the profile
treated as a "default profile", and the different startup options are
handled independently per profile.

Btw, this is likely the same issue as issue 108368.

Are you able to reproduce this with a clean profile?

I believe I can recreate the problem in 18.0.1025.11 (I am running XP SP3).

I thought it was closing the session with a New Tab open, but now it seems
like it is having an incognito window open (then closing) before closing
the session.

I've tried it three times this morning, and get consistent results - just a
new tab when I restart Chrome.

Yes, that seems very likely since I think the source of data is the same as
in bug 110785. I'll take a better look to verify.

In the meantime: Is anyone who has been able to consistently reproduce the
issue able to try with the Chrome Canary (on Windows or Mac)? If the fix
to bug 110785 also fixed this bug, the problem should have disappeared on
canaries starting on Thursday (February 16th).

I looked at the code and confirmed that the data source for "Reopen the
pages that were open last" is indeed the same as the one used in bug
110785, i.e. SessionService::GetLastSession. Therefore this bug should be
fixed by the fix to 110785.

The latest version is 17.0.something. Go to www.google.com/chrome to
update your install. I am running the latest production build on my work

beta, and it is stable as a rock in terms of restoring the tabs.

I had this problem, with tabs reproducibly lost on reboot. Problem FIXED
by disabling the "Google Cloud Print connector".

Anybody else with this problem able to make it go away, this way? Anybody
else with this problem who is NOT using Cloud Print? Maybe there's another
sync/cloud feature or add-on that makes the bug appear for you. Good luck!

More questions for helping to reproduce this:
- Which operating system exactly?
- Which extensions do you have installed in the profile where this
reproduces?
- Is somebody able to reproduce this with a clean profile (remember to set
the "Continue where I left off" setting, it might not be the default on a
clean profile)?
- How about a clean profile with "Local State", "Current Tabs", "Last
Tabs", "Current Session", "Last Session" copied over from the faulty
profile? (User data on Windows is in C:\Users\[User
name]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data.)
- Is somebody able to reproduce this, and also able to build chromium?

Comment #87 on issue 110324 by dblagent...@gmail.com: "Reopen the pages
It happened to me again today. I am going to turn off all of my extensions
and see if this continues to happen. I will also do my best to answer the
questions posed in #86.

- I am using Chrome 19.0.1084.36 beta-m on Win 7 (64 bit).
- I have attached a screen shot showing the extensions I have installed
(all disabled now, except G+ and Screen Capture (I had to use it to get the
screen capture)).
- I haven't tried to reproduce this with a clean profile. I have three
profiles on my machine so I will see if I can reproduce it with one of the
other profiles.

I should note one more thing in case it is useful. Sometimes when this
problem occurs Chrome displays a message on start up that Chrome failed to
shut down correctly from the last session. It then asks me if I want to
restore my tabs. I click on restore and nothing happens. It doesn't restore
my tabs. Also, I don't know why Chrome wouldn't have shut down correctly
the last time because I shut it down using the red X in the upper right
hand corner. There was no indication that Chrome crashed or anything like
that. It looked like it shut down just fine. It is only when it starts up
that it says it didn't shut down correctly and then asks me to restore the
tabs (but then the tabs aren't restored when I click "restore").

As I said, this has happened maybe 30% of the time when I have this
problem. The rest of the time, Chrome just starts up normally and simply
doesn't continue where I left off.

Comment #89 on issue 110324 by dblagent...@gmail.com: "Reopen the pages
There was a crash on April 25, which was when I opened Chrome and it said
that it had not shut down correctly and asked if I wanted to restore my
tabs (but didn't restore the tabs).

I should note something else that was interesting. Chrome has not shown
that message (i.e., Chrome did not shut down correctly, would you like to
restore your tabs) on my main profile since the 25th. However, when I
switched to a different profile that I have not used since at least the
25th, it brought up that message (I use profiles to allow me to
simultaneously log into different Google accounts). It said Chrome had not
shut down correctly and asked if I wanted to restored my tabs. I'm not sure
if that matters, but I thought it was interesting. I guess it means I must
have had that profile open when the crash occurred.

Here were the steps I did.
1. create new profile on D, don't sign into any google account.
2. pin some random tabs
3. delete "profile 3" (recently created profile)
4. notice a "profile 1" in user data, delete it
5. copy "Local State", "Current Tabs", "Last Tabs", "Current

6. Open chrome, as expected tabs from D open on L
7. logout, login on L

Alright, I can finally reproduce (one instance of) this problem. (Thanks
cbentzel & costorf.)

The problem I can reproduce occurs on Linux, tip of trunk Chrome, when
having only one tab open and closing it from the "x" of the tab.

The problem is that a it creates a "tab closed" command, so, when reading
the session file, it thinks there are no open tabs and doesn't restore
anything.

I haven't been able to reproduce this bug with more than one tab open. The
root cause can be the same or it can be different. I'll continue looking
into this.

Hmm. Second thoughts.

Probably the "the last tab closed with the X button of the tab, then
restart" is not supposed to trigger the session restore, but open a new tab
page, at least the code looks like that's the intention.. This might be
confusing, at least it was for me. Anyway, that's probably not what's
behind this bug, since, based on the comments, this bug seems to occur also
with many tabs, and when closing from the X of the chrome, not the X of the
tab.

So, I still cannot reproduce.

I got the chrome data directory from aa123ntcn. The bug reproduces, and the
reason is that the "First Run" file (in the root of the data directory,
where the profile data directories are) is not present. Chrome thinks it's
the first run, and doesn't do a session restore. If I add the file manually
(an empty file will do), the problem doesn't reproduce.

So, at least a partial reason to this bug is that Chrome fails to write
the "First Run" file. However, I suspect it's not the only reason behind
this bug. Some users have reported that the session restore fails for some
profiles and works for other profiles. The "First Run" file is shared among
profiles, so it cannot explain such behavior. Also, once the file gets
written, then the session restore should work consistently, so this doesn't
explain why it sometimes works and sometimes fails.

People who see the failure: Can you check if the "First Run" file is
present (before you launch chrome), and if not, try adding it, and see if
the problem goes away?

I've attached some screen shots of my Profiles in case it is useful. A
couple of things to note.

First, I opened the "Last Tabs" file in my default profile in Notetab and
it appears that all of the tabs I had open last are listed in it. There is
a lot of undecipherable stuff, but every so often there is a URL. The URLs
are for the tabs I had open last and the URLs are in the same order the
tabs were. This leads me to believe that the Last Tabs file contains a
correct list of the pages I opened last. Also, the date of the "Last Tabs"
file indicates that it was last modified when I shut down my computer in
the morning on 7 May 2012 (it has been off since then until I just started
it up).

Second, Profile 2 is some old profile that appears to be junk. Nothing in
there has been modified since 2011. When I go to manage my profiles, I only
see three profiles and they correspond to the Default Profile, Profile 3,
and Profile 4. The Profile 2 is a mystery.

Afaik, nothing should go wrong if you just delete your profile data folders
except that you'll of course lose all the profile data (bookmarks, history,
cookies, themes, extensions, etc.)

I suggest you *don't* delete the profile data folders but just move them
away from the chrome profile data folder to somewhere else. This way you
can restore them later.

I'm atm adding more debug prints, so once that change reaches canary,
whoever can reproduce the problem could retrieve the logs and attach them
to this bug (or sent them to me).

I'll re-ping this bug when the canary version is recent enough.

Version 20.0.1138 will reach Canary any minute now. After it has gone
canary, can you (people who can reproduce the bug) do the following:

- Run chrome with --enable-logging --v=1 (you can add the parameters to the
shortcut)
- Next the the session restore fails, get the chrome_debug.log, it should
be in the chrome data directory (where the profiles are), e.g.,
C:\Users\[User name]\AppData\Local\[...]\User Data on Windows, /Users/[User
name]Name/Library/Application\ Support/[...] on Mac and ~/.config/[...] on
Linux and send it to me. The log can contain sensitive information (I don't
know all components that log stuff there), so don't send it if you don't
want to expose it.
- Also, you could describe what was the situation where the session restore
failed.
- Last Session | Current Session | Last Tabs | Current Tabs files might
also be helpful.

It seems that there are 2 different repro scenarios here:
1. Startup option "continue where I left off", exit & start chrome -> no
session restore.
2. Clicking "restore" in the crash info bar -> no session restore.

Comment #114 on issue 110324 by dblagent...@gmail.com: "Reopen the pages
I installed Canary 21.0.1137.1 this morning and signed into Chrome using my
personal account. It synced up with the mother ship (some cloudy place
where all my settings are stored) and applied all of my user preferences so
it is virtually the same as the beta channel (the one I normally use). This
is what I observed.

The first thing I noticed is that the "Screen Capture (by Google)"
extension didn't sync - i.e., wasn't automatically added to Canary (and
maybe other extensions). This despite the fact that I have set it up to
sync all extensions. There may be some other extensions that don't sync
too, but Screen Capture is one I use all the time so I immediately noticed
it. I should note that earlier when I tried deleting my profile and
starting with a new one using Chrome beta channel (19.0.1084.46), Chrome
also failed to sync this extension. I had to manually add it. This is kind
of off topic, but I thought you might want to know.

The next thing I noticed is that "Continue where I left off" initially did
not work for my two additional user profiles. This is how it went down. I
installed Canary, and signed into my personal account. This synced all my
settings with Canary.

Next I went to Settings and added another user. This brigs up a separate
window and asks me to sign into Canary, which I did. It then synced that
profile with the mother ship. It was automatically set to "Continue where I
left off" in the settings because that is how I set it up on Beta when I
open that profile. It opened to the new tab page where it showed the
following icons: "Web store" "Google Search" "Google Docs" "YouTube"
and "Gmail".

I clicked on "Google Search" button and it took me to Google's home page. I
then clicked the red X in the upper right hand corner and closed the
window. The window for my default profile was now the only Canary window
open. I then clicked on the icon in the upper left corner, which exposed a
menu showing my default profile (with a check mark by it) and the profile I
just added.

I clicked on the profile I just added and a new window opened up. I
expected it to open with a tab on Google's home page, but instead it opened
a single tab to the new tab page. I again clicked the "Google Search" icon
so that it navigated me to Google's home page and then closed the window.
Again I was back down to having one window open to my default profile. I
then selected the other profile using the icon in the upper right hand
corner, which caused another window to open. It did the same thing it did
before - it opened a single tab to the new tab page and did not remember
that I was previously on Google's home page. I did repeated this four or
five more times and it failed to continue where I left off each time. It
was 100% reproducible.

I decided to add a third user profile to see if it suffered from the same
problem and it did. I would click on "Google Search" and be taken to
Google's home page, close the window, reopen the user profile, and it would
open the new page. This was also 100% reproducible.

I still hadn't closed my default user profile yet (I was just opening and
closing the two additional ones I created) so I wondered what would happen
if I did. Closing my default user profile would close Canary completely. I
tried this and when it restarted all my tabs were there. It had
actually "continued where I left off." Not only that, but when I opened the
other two user profiles, they also opened to the pages I had open last -
i.e., Google's home page. Once I closed and restarted Canary, things seem
to be working pretty good.

I should also probably note a couple of interesting things I noticed with
the Beta channel. This morning when I opened beta, it did not continue
where I left off. It also did not tell me that Chrome had failed to shut
down correctly, etc. When I tried to open the other two profiles in Beta,
it brought up the screen again telling me that Chrome failed to shut down
correctly and asked if I wanted to restore the tabs. I clicked yes and
nothing happened.

Anyway, I will try the logging once Canary is updated to 1138.

Comment #126 on issue 110324 by dblagent...@gmail.com: "Reopen the pages
I am running canary 21.0.1138.0 and it happened to me again. I started up
my computer and when I opened Chrome it did not reopen the tabs I had open
before. I had a lot of tabs open before, but it only opened a single tab to
my home page.

Let me describe what I am doing in greater detail with the hope that maybe
it will help you figure out what is going on. The last four or five times I
have done the following, the bug appears.

I regularly use Chrome on two computers. My home laptop running Win 7 - 64
bit, Chrome Beta (now Canary since I installed it a couple of days ago) and
a work desktop running Win XP and Chrome Beta (I don't use Canary at work).
I sign into Chrome on both computers, but only Chrome on my laptop has a
problem remembering my tabs.

When I am at home, I start Chrome on my laptop (Win 7 - 64 bit) and it
fails to remember my tabs (Beta or Canary). I then set all my tabs again. I
pin the following tabs in the following order - Google play music, Google
calendar, Google Docs, Gmail, Google+, Google Reader, and Google News. I
then open one or two tabs that I use for miscellaneous stuff, but I don't
pin them.

I then close and reopen Chrome to see if it remembers the pages and it
does. I use Chrome for the rest of the day and sometimes leave my computer
on for long periods of time while it is idle.

When I am at home, I access my desktop computer at work using GoToMyPC.
Chrome is usually running the entire time on my work desktop computer and I
sometimes use it through the GoToMyPC connection.

At the end of the day (usually late at night), I shut Chrome down by
clicking the red X in the upper right hand corner and then shut off my
computer.

The next day I go in to work and use Chrome on my work desktop. The desktop
remains on 24/7 so that I can access it from home whenever I need it. When
I go into work, I never turn it on because it is already on. I haven't
noticed any strange problems with Chrome beta at work. It seems to remember
my tabs, but I don't really care there since I only open a couple of
unpinned tabs (I don't want all those Google tabs open on my work
computer). At the end of the day, I leave my work computer on and head home.

The next morning I start up my home laptop and open Chrome (Beta or Canary)
and it doesn't remember the tabs I had open. The process then repeats
itself.

If you get the logger working so that it isn't super slow, I will try it
the next time I open Chrome Canary on my home laptop. I'm also going to try
and see if this problem only manifests itself when I use my work desktop
between sessions on my home laptop. For example, this weekend I will shut
Chrome down on my home laptop on Friday night and then open it again Sunday
morning without using my work desktop in between and see if it remembers my
tabs. If it does, then it is likely that something about my use of Chrome
on the work desktop is causing Chrome on my home laptop to forget my tabs.

Sorry for these long posts, but this bug is really bugging me. I want to
get it fixed badly. If you want, I can send you my phone number and we can
talk more about this.

One more thing I forgot to mention in my lost post (or novella if you
prefer) is that when Chrome on my laptop fails to remember the tabs that
were open, it doesn't open the new tab page or some random web page. No, it
opens a single tab to the website stored as my home page. I'm not sure if
this is important, but I thought I better mention it.

Windows 7 x64:
["C:\Users\Merlin\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"
--type=service] is the problem (Google CloudPrint) for me !
This command is launched when a Windows session is open (msconfig.exe) and
it reset the "Current Session" file !!
Disable Google CloudPrint to fix the problem.

I can confirm that the suggested workaround (disabling Google Cloud Print)
indeed works.

This doesn't work if one doesn't have anything like Cloud Print enabled.
