I can confirm I am also seeing this issue. One interesting tidbit: it seems
that if you close Chrome before clicking on another link, it will get
opened in a new tab when Chrome reopens. I'm using this as my (horrible)
workaround for the moment.

This issue appears to have been fixed for me despite there ever being an
update since the last time the issue has been reported. Can anyone report
if this issue has been fixed on their device?

It seems fixed for me too (since last update from Apr 17 - Chrome Beta
0.18.4409.2396). I supose comment from Apr 19 is about a previous version,
but I don't know.

The behavior changed to go back to a configuration that tries to reuse tabs
to the extent possible. The Beta update in April had introduce a regression
that was resulting in insufficient reuse/ too many open tabs. Especially if
users were switching back to Chrome via the app switcher, as opposed via
the hardware back key (which closes temporary tabs opened from external
apps).

Having said that, we fully realize that what is there is likely not working
for some of you. We are actively monitoring usage trends and expect to make
some refinements on this front.

It cannot possibly be good UI to have a user click three links from an
external app and then go to Chrome to find only the latest link is there.
It is contrary to the way every desktop browser behaves as well as every
other Android browser behaves. If it is a resource issue, inform the user
in a Chrome dialog/popup that the number of open tabs is likely to affect
performance when this threshhold is reached. It's also inconsistent in that
when the user selects "open link in new window" in Chrome, this behaviour
(tab re-use) is not present. Making a decision on behalf of the user that
no, they really didn't want to see those previous two links they
deliberately clicked is very poor.

I agree wholeheartedly with the the previous post (jimmyf). I use many
widgets that have multiple links in them such as scollable twitter feeds
and I typically click on a link, chrome pops up, I press home, and continue
reading the twitter feed until I'm finished. I'll usually have 5-6 links
that I will repeat this process with. It's nice because as I continue to
read the widget, the pages are loading in the background. When this issue
was "fixed" in the previous build, I was finally able to set Chrome to my
default browser. Now, I will have to hold off again. I also appreciate
the active discussion with the chromium devs, thank you.

Same, going back to stock until this is resolved. At the very least you
could add an option to open links in new tabs that can be off by default

I've had to switch browsers too because of this. Absolutely loving Chrome
on Android except for this. I routinely open multiple links from an RSS
reader (open one, switch back to rss reader to scan while it loads, load
another one, etc), then go to the browser to read them. Having to wait for
it to load and then read it really slows down my rss consumption.

Seems like a great compromise would be to make this a preference if
possible. User selectable = everyone is happy! :)

I have noticed this issue rear it's ugly head again. Not sure why, but
certain apps are obeying the "open external links in separate tabs" while
others aren't. Offending apps include the GMail app and Google Voice to
name a few.

#17, that would imply that GMail and Google Voice are using
EXTRA_APPLICATION_ID and not specifying Browser.EXTRA_CREATE_NEW_TAB, would
it not (from my reading of #16)?

I personally would prefer a user configuration setting to override this
behavior because I *always* want a new tab, as I assume almost everyone in
this thread does to. I don't click links for kicks - I click them because I
want to view that page.

Seeing this frustrating behaviour on my Nexus7 when using Google Reader and
tabs opening in Chrome. Completely breaks how I'm used to using Google
Reader.
