entry has bogus query params
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=130942

I really wish you'd provided the screenshot before making any changes --
now we may not be able to figure out what caused this. It was already
clear that the text repetition was due to the query param being repeated,
but I'd hoped to find a cause for that.

This text doesn't appear in our prepopulate data. I don't know whether the
entry showed up due to autodetection, sync, was modified by instant, or
something else.

Sreeram/Scott/Steve, have you guys seen this "channel=rcs" param before? I
haven't, so I'm wondering if that could give us a clue where this came from.

Sorry about not taking the screenshot immediately, but I doubt it would
have provided anything useful. Here is what it looks like now, and I
suspect it would have looked identical if I had taken it earlier, since
most of the search URL is not visible.

And to muddy the issue: Somewhere along the line I enabled "Instant, for
faster searching". Unfortunately, I don't remember whether this was before
or after I changed the default and saw the problem.

It's not a prepopulated engine (since it's not using the Google base URL).
It seems strange that you have so many possible defaults; did you try
making a bunch of different engines default to see what that would be like?

Hm, I haven't seen that channel=rcs thing before. Looping in Anton from
Protector to see if they've come across something that might have injected
this bogus Google query Template URL.

I haven't played around with a lot of different search engines: I used the
default (google.ch for me), then switched to google.com. I didn't add any
of the other search engines shown, but other than toprq.com they're all
sites that I visit, and seem target to me. I assume that's something that
was done based on my browser history. I did import settings from Firefox,
if that could be the source of the problem.

No, I haven't seen the channel=rcs thing before, either.

In sync testing we saw Firefox imports merge incorrectly with local Omnibox
history data and thus affecting the sync data set, issue 131116.

sferrari63@, at which client (OS, build) did the import happen? Thanks.

I bet this is an imported engine.

If you still have your Firefox profile, could you check the search engines
and bookmark keywords there for an entry like this and see if it also has a
tripled set of params?

I'm on OS X 10.6.8, Firefox 12.0; not sure where to get the build
information. I'm also not exactly sure where to look for the search engine
information in Firefox. I did about:config and see

browser.search.defaulturl;http://www.google.com/search?lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=

I can look around some more if you folks tell me how, but frankly it seems
like you suspect Firefox, and I (probably 'we') all have a bunch of other
stuff to do. Maybe we should call it a day and come back to this if
someone else sees it?

You don't want to look in about:config; you want to look in your bookmarks
and in the search engines configured for the Firefox search box (which I
think can be examined by right-clicking the search box?).

I don't suspect Firefox of doing anything wrong here, I'm trying to figure
out what data was supplied to the importer so I can figure out whether we
broke things during import, or there was an entry with some bogus data
somewhere in your Firefox profile, or neither and the bug is elsewhere.

I didn't have the search box configured (I got rid of it and just use the
address bar, like in Chrome), but I added it just now and right-clicking
just gives paste, paste and search, and "show suggestions", which is
checked. I CAN get to "manage search engines" from a pull-down, but it
just lists seven typical search engines, with no obvious way to see what
the config is. Google.com is the default, and using it shows no
triplication.

Not sure what to look at in the bookmarks. Searching for "google" finds
stuff, but nothing interesting. Searching for "rcs" finds nothing.

Can you paste in the resulting URL from using the google.com entry to
search for something using the Firefox search box?

I'm kind of grasping at straws here -- really unsure where all this stuff
came from :(

Searching for "xkcd" in Firefox's searchbox:
