Ok, this is awkward: this actually fixed itself. I dunno if the wrong DLL
was unloaded
from memory and the correct one was loaded, but I did not get it again.
Yeah, add me onto the pile, too. I'm getting the same message. The
browser isn't
crashing, it just gives me that error message.
When I open the browser, the message comes up SEVEN times.
When I open a new tab? Error message again, for each tab.
If I use the scroll wheel to click a link and open it in a new tab, the
error does
not come up. If I left click, the error does not come up. If I right
click a link
to enter its context menu, then click "open in new tab", the error message
comes up.
What's causing this??
Just updated to Chrome Version 5.0.335.0 dev. This issue is now occuring
everytime I
open Chrome. Never happened before; I'm on Windows-7 32bit. Help!
Thanks for the additional info on post 8; I am the OP and those are all the
same issues
I have. Glad to finally see some besides me is having the problem. Using
5.0.337.0
(39986) but still having the problem.
I'm using the dev version of 5.0.335.0 on Windows 7 Ultimate, if any of
that helps.
Heck, if you want, I can give you a list of my installed/active extensions.
As of yet no one from the Chromium team has been assigned. I am sure it
will be soon as
other people have finally started reporting the issue.
I get the same error - i also get it when i open any bookmarks
Ditto, Windows 7 Ultimate 64x
I noticed this over a week ago using Chromium builds, so I reverted back to
Google
Chrome. Today, Chrome updated & now it has the same issue. I'm on Windows 7
ultimate
32 bit.
Chrome 5.0.335.0 dev & Chromium 5.0.337.0 (39954)
I have the same issue. Running Windows 7 Ultimate, Chrome 5.0.335.0 dev.
Just
started happening for me today. Googling looks to bring up the method call
from
FFMPEG shown below.

[quote]
enum PixelFormat av_get_pix_fmt ( const char * name )
Returns the pixel format corresponding to name.
If there is no pixel format with name name, then looks for a pixel format

my quick and dirty solution to take away the popup (since an uninstall of
chrome
wouldn't work)
was the uninstall chrome and create a new admin account, then deleting the
old account
:(
byebye annoying popup, hello re-install of chrome and 60 some-odd
extensions, WHAT A
HASTLE
FIXED - I fixed my issue. The error message I was getting about
av_get_pix_fmt had a
file name of avutil-50.dll included in it. I did a search and found three
of them on
my computer.
One in C:\Windows,
C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.335.0, and
C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.322.2. I
moved the
one in the C:\Windows folder to a temp folder on my desktop and the error
went away.
I now deleted that file and all works well and the error is no more.
I would just try moving it before deleting it permanantly.
Tim, I'm not sure deleting dll files from C:\Windows is the best idea in
general. You
may break something else. Then again I'm not any kind of Windows expert so
I could be
way off. Either way, that would definitely be classified as a "workaround"
and not a
"fix". ;)
I installed ElectricSheep a couple of days ago, but I removed it the same
day. Chrome
was working fine until the last update.
I deleted the avutil-50.dll from the C:\Windows\ directory (I didn't have
it on
System32) and that appears to fix the error (so far)
update: Removed Electric Sheep, no errors
This error is definitely caused by the avutil-50.dll that ElectricSheep
puts in the
C:\Windows directory. This has not been an issue in the past. I have been
using
these two programs for months. Google must have updated something that
changed where
it looks for the file.
I tried copying the Google avutil-50.dll from
{C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.335.1} to
C:\Windows
and Chrome worked fine but ElectricSheep Crashed and closed. I even updated
ElectricSheep to try to get a new version of the file and it did not help.
I wonder when Google will look into this. These two programs used to play
nice, and
ElectricSheep hasn't updated anything on this front.
Thread started over at eletricsheep forum:
http://community.electricsheep.org/node/571
looks like over at Electric sheep they should be fixing the problem.
"Fri, 02/26/2010 - 20:58 - spot
thanks for the bug report.
thanks for the bug report. the next release statically links that library,
which
solves the problem. it will be out in a few days."
Updating Electric Sheep fixed my issue - Thanks!
Problem just started for me. Only thing that changed from when Chrome
worked without
bombing and now is a Paint.net update was applied.
Mayhaps I've found the culprit?
I upgraded electric sheep to version 2.7b23 and I am having the same issue,
it only
stopped temporarily after re-installation.
I can confirm that I updated Electric Sheep and I am still seeing the
problem (Even
after a reboot)
Not for me Build 5.0.342.2 - uninstalled Electric Sheep 2.7b23 and it went
away.
+1 - Still having this issue - WinXP and Chrome 5.0.342.2
+1 - Still having this issue - WinXP and Chrome 5.0.342.2
Although copying avutil-50.dll from C:\Documents and
Settings\{Username}\Local
Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.342.2 to
C:\WINDOWS\system32
and restarting Chrome seems to fix the issue.
I used Comment 62's resolution and it resolve my problem (I had recently
replaced the
hard drive in my computer but was still using XP and also Electric Sheep.
But I use
Electric Sheep on my laptops and had not had any problem). Here is Comment

Comment 62 by TSchultz55, Mar 10, 2010
Thanks a lot to whoever narrowed down to electric sheep. I uninstalled it
and the
problem went away.
FIXED:
Everyone using Electric Sheep should uninstall and download the newest
version. The
Newest version has fixed this issue. It is too good of a screen saver to
do without.
Ran into this issue this morning on Vista 32 with Chrome 5.0.342.8 beta.
Took several
tries to get it to fix. Simply upgrading Electric Sheep or uninstalling
then
installing the upgrade didn't help. I had to uninstall, reboot, delete the
avutil-
50.dll from the Windows directory, then install the upgraded Electric
Sheep. Problem
solved!
well great... What if I never heard of that stupid electric sheep
screensaver before
and never had it installed? Still getting that same msg! I think I'll be
switching to
firefox now... Isn't there any other help?
Note: This is not an issue specific to Electric Sheep. avutil-50.dll is a
library included
with FFMPEG, a cross-platform library for audio/video manipulation.
Numerous
applications utilize FFMPEG, and chances are your Win box is currently
using an older
version of avutil that does not contain "av_get_pix_fmt". Comment #62 is a
solution for
users who do not have Electric Sheep installed. Possibly updating your
Windows PATH
environment variable to point to the Chromium folder where avutil-50.dll
resides could
be a temporary fix as well.
Updating Electric sheep didn't fix it, I attribute that to the odd mishmash
of video
editing and video utilities I've got installed but copying the dll as per
#62 did
workaround the problem.
The DLL was not already in system32 and the system bluescreened as soon as
I put it in
there but everything was peachy upon reboot. The downside is that if
chrome ever needs
a newer version I'll have to remember this and do it again.
The file wasn't in the System32 directory but the Windows directory.
That's the one
that needs to be deleted.
if you still have the issue just delete avutil-50.dll from the Windows
folder!... it is
important only for Electric Sheep.
Happens on Win7 32 bit, I do *not* have ElectricSheep installed.
Restarted computer after uninstalling electric sheep, thinking that fixed
the issue.
It is back again and makes Google Chrome completely unusable, going back to
Firefox
till this is fixed.
Happening to me too. I left my work PC on overnight, came back this
morning and Chrome
started displaying this error on opening - several times and each time I
open a new
tab. Win XP 32 bit.
Sorry, I should add that I don't have electric sheep installed.
This error popped up around 6 pm EDT today for me as well. I noticed a
couple Windows
updates were applied yesterday and the day before (KB982632 and KB981793),
and I do
have Electric Sheep installed.

Comment #104 on issue 35857 by d...@chromium.org: chrome.exe - Entry Point
Not Found The procedure entry point av_get_pix_fmt could not be located in
the dynamic link library avutil-50.dll
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=35857
For users of Electric Sheep, you need to *uninstall* your current version
of Electric Sheep (to
remove Electric Sheep's copy of avutil-50.dll) and reinstall the *latest*
version.
For other users that don't have Electric Sheep, you probably still have a
copy of avutil-50.dll in
your C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 directory which is not as up to date
as the avutil-50.dll
that is in Chrome\Application\5.0.375.55 directory. However, the older
avutil-50.dll in
C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 will take precedence over the version in
Chrome's directory but
the older version does not provide the necessary function for Chrome to
run, causing this error.
Users have reported that deleting any avutil-50.dll from C:\Windows or
C:\Windows\System32 or
copying Chrome's avutil-50.dll into those directories solves the issue, but
this may cause
problems with other software, as it is unknown which other programs may
have installed or depend
on any already existing avutil-50.dll that may be there. This is not
necessarily a recommended
procedure, but just a summary of the previous comments.
Confirming Fix.
Just started having this issue today on Win7 Ult-64bit. Replaced the
avutil-50.dll in
the WINDOWS dir with the one found in the Chrome dir
(C:\Users\<UsersName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.55).
Restarted
Chrome and it works perfectly.
Thanks "Comment 38 by peorth", I have Sheep, but didn't remove just copied
file from
latest version folder into system32 and no pop up.
OS: Windows XP
Version: 5.0.375.55
Copied file from: C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Local
Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.55
To: C:\WINDOWS\system32
@ozalots: This must have worked for you because you're on XP, cause like
I said
above, I removed Electric Sheep and copied that file to system32 and it
didn't work for
me.
Running:
Chrome 5.0.375.55
Vista 64-bit
Running winxp; I followed 106's advice, backed up the original
avutil-50.dll in
C:\Windows and replaced it with the one I found in C:\Documents and
Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.55
and it worked for me.
and it worked for me. I also have electric sheep installed on this
machine, but it's
not enabled to work as the default screen saver. Not sure if that makes any
difference but this did fix for me.
Problem solved...Windows XP SP3 here. Started seeing the Chrome error mssg
today.
Found two copies of avutil-50.dll: one in Chrome's folder and one in
C:/Windows.
Tried copying, moving, etc the avutil-50.dll, and only succeeded in
crashing electric
sheep (bigtime!) if it did not find its version in C: Windows, and Chrome
would
continue to glitch or crash unless it found its own copy in the Chrome
folder.
However, I *did solve the problem* by 1) uninstalling Electric Sheep
(thankfully, it
does not kill your flock), 2) reinstalling Chrome (don't know if that was
really
necessary, but it only took a couple minutes), and downloading and
re-installing
Electric Sheep (http://community.electricsheep.org/download).
So far, all is well. Now, there's only ONE COPY of avutil-50.dll on my hard
drive--
the one Chrome installed in "C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.55\".
Hope this helps someone else. This was a rather painless solution, compared
to other
troubleshooting efforts I've had to go through for other vendor products
(e.g., MS!).
No need to point fingers to blame. Just solve the problem and get back to
work!
Thanks for all the input and suggestions. Have a good holiday weekend
everyone!
If you have electric sheep, all you need to do is uninstall the program.
Instant fix
Hi, I have the same problem. I uninstalled Electric Sheep, which seemed to
fix the
problem. However, I decided to reinstall Google Chrome, since I was having
another
problem with it. Since doing that, it seems the original problem has come
back, even
though I no longer have Electric Sheep installed. My second problem is also
still
present (one particular websites produces 'aw snap' message before fully
loading,
but it fine on other browsers.
Both these problems have only arisen since I updated to the latest version
of Chrome
(5.0.375.55). Think I might use Opera instead now.
None of the steps listed above fix the problem for 64-bit systems!!!
Google, are you fixing this?!
This is the first bug with Chrome... Please fix it! (I run windows 7, and
just updated
my Google Chrome to the new version. every time it pops up the message...)
FIX PLEASE
Running Win 7, I started receiving the error message today. I haven't
installed
anything new recently. I removed electric sheep and it instantly fixed
problem. I have
not tried to reinstall electric sheep yet...i'm keeping my fingers crossed.
On windows 7, removing and reinstalling electric sheep seems to get rid of
the problem.
I ununstalled Electric Sheep (sob sob), and this fixed the problem. Does
anyone
know why?
Running Vista 64 and getting the error, but hasn't happened yet on my other
PC using
Windows 7 64. Both machines are using Electric Sheep though. I really
hope they can
arrive at a solution, because I'd rather not remove Electric Sheep if
that's what's
causing the issue...
Look here:
http://mondotech.blogspot.com/2010/03/google-chrome-entry-point-not-found.html
I uninstalled Electric Sheep. Issue gone!
None of the steps listed above fix the problem for Vista 64-bit systems!!!
I used comment #62 and it worked! I have windows 7 ultimate 64
edit: I take that back it worked for a little while but now its back again:(
I ran process explorer while the error message was up, did a search for open
handles/dll's named avutil and it said it had C:\Windows\avutil-50.dll
opened by
chrome.exe Way better than trying to guess where windows is loading the dll
from. I
wonder if windows programs can specifically ask to use their own dll's.
Instead of just copying avutil-50.dll I also copied avformat-52.dll and
avcodec-52.dll
into the directory. Maybe the dlls should get renamed to
chrome-avutil-50.dll etc,
would that work?
I have this bug too, but it happens after i run the Disk Cleanup tool of
windows vista,
i dont have electric sheep...
OS: Windows XP

uninstalled Electric Sheep: same problem, same fix!
I just uninstalled electric sheep and the problem went away without even a
reboot.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=35857
Issue 45530 has been merged into this issue.
I have a workaround that fixes Google Chrome without requiring Electric
Sheep to be
uninstalled or unusable.
I went to C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\Application
Inside there I went into the folder with the most recent version (in my case
5.0.375.55) and copied avutil-50.dll from that folder, and placed it into
the parent
folder (alongside chrome.exe).
Now it will locally find the correct dll. HOWEVER, this probably means that
each time
a new chrome update is (silently) pushed, the most recent DLL may need to
be moved.
This is fucking pissing me off and I can't fix it. -.-
Yeah... Add me on to this heap... I just got back from a Lacuna Coil
concert in Denver
I am fucking whacked out of my mind and this shit starts happening??? I
never had this
problem before so this must be my fault for getting shit faced... THANKS!
Both my partner and I were having that error in Chrome. I did and uninstall
on Electric
Sheep. The error message is now a thing of the past.
I had the same problem, fixed it by changing the extension of this file:
C://windows/system32/avutil-50.dll
to
C://windows/system32/avutil-50.BAK
this causes the file not to work anymore, but I don't find any problems
anymore.
You might also delete the file, but I don't know if I have to change it
back when
Chrome has a new update.
Well, do with it whatever you want to do, but it worked for me!:D
I encountered this issue a few days ago without having
installed/uninstalled anything
other that an MS update (Windows Defender only). A little research showed
me that
the problem might be linked to Electric Sheep, which I do have installed.
So I went
to the site, installed the latest release (Windows 2.7b27).
I did this over the top of my existing install. Afterwards, I opened
Chrome and
still got the error. A little more investigation showed 2 version of ES
now on my
computer. I uninstalled the old version and *bingo*, problem solved.
No reboot was needed for me.
WOW! I don't even use Electric Sheep. I installed it a long time ago, but I
use Google
Screensaver instead. I uninstalled Electric Sheep, and the problem
immediately went
away.
WinXP SP3
Chrome 5.0.375.55
No Electric Sheep, though it had been installed, many, many moons ago.
Goosey comment 139: Copy the avutil-50.dll from the current version folder
into the
Application folder, seems to have worked for me, though this is obviously
not a good
long-term solution if this dll is ever updated again.
Folder location:
C:\Documents and Settings\<yer user name>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\Application
Electric Sheep here too but I have not had my screen saver set to that for
a while.
This still needs to be fixed. I'd rather use Firefox then get rid of
Electric Sheep
Problem:
I too ran into this problem a few hours ago. I have been using
ElectricSheep and chrome
together for a long time, no issues. Updated windows vista ultimate 64bit
earlier and
now this error is occuring.
Solution:
All i did was delete the avutil-50.dll file in my C:\WINDOWS folder. Poof
chrome works
perfectly as well as ElectricSheep. No uninstalls or reboots needed. :)
Windows 7 (Enterprise) x64
5.0.375.55
Adthwart 0.9.10
Renamed the avutil-50.dll to .bak at the end in:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64
And it worked for me, thanks.
I installed ViedioViewer CMS to view my security cameras over the network.
The problem
started on both of the computers that I installed the viewer, a Windows XP
and a
windows Vista. Unfortunately looks like its good by Google Chrome I need to
run this
software... :(
I've had the software for more than 3 months and the chrome problem just
started so I
am almost sure this VideoViewer is not it. Just what happened to me.
Fixed, copied the avutil-50.dll
from C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.55
to
C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application
Basically copy and paste the .dll file into the folder where chrome.exe is
located.
Should be a temporary fix until google decides to release an update..
Currently running Win7, 64bit Ultimate.
Hope it helps
I get the same error message on Win7, 64bit Ultimate whenever I start
chrome.
- I don't have eletric sheep screen saver installed ever.
- I don't have avutil-50.dll in c:\windows\system32.
- Using chrome 6.0.422.0
This problem started appearing a couple of days ago. I don't remember any
specific
newly installed program these days.
Please fix this issue.
Same error as everyone, using XP64, chrome 5.0.375.55
Using Windows 7 Prof. K.
Same error message.
Thanks for the fix, iceybreeze. Comment 163 seems to be a working solution
so far.
Google needs to update Chrome ASAP.
#163 worked for me as well. Thanks iceybreeze.
I copied the avutil-50.dll from the google application directory to the
C:\Windows folder. No more trouble :> When I did a search for
avutil-50.dll and found a copy in the c:\Windows folder I got suspicious.
It turns out the version of the file in C:\Windows was older than the
version in the Google folder.
