Scott: Do you know who might be able to comment on whether this is
something we can/want to fix?

"then the previous tabs are not automatically restored"

When your machine crashes Chrome thinks it crashed too and won't
automatically restore your previous session (else it get into a cycle of
continually crashing). In this situation chrome should prompt you if you
want to restore your previous session. Do you not see an infobar in this
state?

Chrome does not prompt me to restore the previous tabs. It only allow me to
proactively restore them from the 'recently closed' at the bottom. I would
love to get a suggestion to restore the crashed tabs (like in FF),
however my input refers to a different issue:

Lets assume that the 'recently closed' list at the bottom does have the
closed (or crashed with the system) tabs, which is the common behavior (I
know you had a known issue on tabs persistence on restarts, but I think this
is getting better... ), unless I am restoring all the tabs in the same
session, then if I need to restart again, I will lose these recently closed
tabs, even though I haven't restored them or been asked if I need them
saved. *Chrome keeps only 'one generation' of recently closed tabs*, which
is a strange design. I would prefer these 'recently closed tabs' to be kept
(and managed) for way longer time (just like the history...).

I hope I was clear now. Thanks guys.

Confirmed that a hard restart clears all recently closed tabs.

I often find myself (unfortunately) buried in tabs, and leave my computer.
Occasionally my battery dies and kills the network card (hardware BIOS
switch) and I have to restart, with chrome still prompting me to open
closed tabs. Then of course I lose all my recent data.

Is it possible we could fix this, or is this a no-fix bug?

Thanks.

Comment #5 on issue 130066 by brymas...@gmail.com: "Recently closed tabs"

Version 21.0.1180.89

This has been an annoying problem for me too and I'm constantly
losing "closed tabs" sessions. Due to an OS crash, I lost a couple tab
sessions I hadn't yet reopened and instead was only able to recover the
last active tabs before the reboot.

For example, let's say you closed Chrome when you had two windows of tabs
open. Now you've reopened Chrome, you've opened new tabs and you see those
two windows of closed tabs in the "recently closed" list that you have not
reopened just yet- great! But then something bad happens and your browser
or OS has crashed. You reopen Chrome again and those two windows of closed
tabs are gone and you can now only recover what was just actively open.

"Recently closed tabs" really ought to persist between restarts of Chrome
because there are plenty of cases where one could lose tabs. This has been
a big pain for far too long.

Any more thoughts from devs on this?

I've now switched away from chrome because of this. Its not just crashing
which is an issue. Sometimes you forget to proactively reopen tabs after a
normal chrome shutdown. Even when the info bar does appear, it shouldn't
lose all my tabs just because an application has launched a webpage and
I've visited a few pages without noticing the bar and pushed the 6 recently
closed windows off the list. Grabbing lastsession lasttabs currentsession
currenttabs files is too labour intensive, and prone to deletion if you
reopen chrome again. Maxthon's last session page is much much better.

I must say that according to my personal experience as a chrome
user (still...), the situation of this issue is way much better now. I am
sorry to hear that some users are still encountering such problems.

I cannot believe that this issue is still not fixed. It has happened to me
hundreds of times. I use tab cloud for normal operation. So I can shut down
multiple windows, each with several tabs open without worrying about
whether I can reopen them or not. But this does not help me when there are
crashes and restarts. I just lost 2 windows with about 30 tabs, some of
which have been open for a month (I refer to them almost daily, but without
refreshing). So there is no way I am going to find them in history. Such a
poor design flaw. Someone needs to get on this.

Yes, this really needs to be fixed. I have just lost 20 tabs that were open
for weeks.
