note that the image in the webstore can't be an old image I uploaded before, and therefore the webstore must have "brigthend" the image.

After checking with the engineering team, it looks like what happened is that the image got converted to a JPG (we do this for compression) and this change was the result of that conversion.

I checked and they did take off the promotional images; it says "Image
awaiting approval and will be displayed in store once approved." since
several days.

OK, let me see if I can get that fixed for you. I'm not sure why they were taken off.
