Hi Jim,
We agree with you - it should be possible to type the first letter of
an item in a menu to quickly jump to that item or select it. I'm going
to go ahead and make that change, and you should see it in a future
version of Chrome.
In the meantime, I have one idea that you might want to try: use
Chrome's "Omnibox" (the location bar) to autocomplete bookmarks.
For example, press either Ctrl+L or Alt+D to focus the location bar,
then type the first few characters of the name of your bookmark. The
list of all possible matches will be displayed below - bookmark
matches are usually immediately below search suggestions. You can use
down arrow or Tab to select the right one, or Page Down to quickly
jump to the last item in the list - then Enter to open it.
Over time, Chrome learns your favorites - so bookmarks you use more
frequently will show up above bookmarks you rarely use.
